Re: The Movie Topic
Yeah it is funny but all his films are.
In the 80's a famous beer company, Carlsberg I think if I remember, took his idea from his film, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, to make their commercials. Martin created a movie in the vein of a 1950's private eye movie.
Edited by Bud Molin, the film is a collage of black-and-white movie clips from 18 different films of the 1940s (and one from 1950) with more recent footage of Martin and other actors similarly shot in black-and-white, with the result that the original dialogue and acting of the historic films have now become part of a completely different (and ridiculous) story.
Among the actors who appeared from classic films were Edward Arnold, Ingrid Bergman, Humphrey Bogart, Wally Brown, James Cagney, William Conrad, Jeff Corey, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Brian Donlevy, Kirk Douglas, Ava Gardner, Cary Grant, Alan Ladd, Veronica Lake, Burt Lancaster, Charles Laughton, Charles McGraw, Fred MacMurray, John Miljan, Ray Milland, Edmund O'Brien, Vincent Price, Barbara Stanwyck, Lana Turner and Norma Varden.
I have to find you a clip.

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. (I don't know you'll find this funny but it is)
Classic Carling Black Label advert used imagery from the war - priceless.

Re: The Movie Topic
Here's the Holsten Pils in the 80's made those adverts not Carlsberg. Really very clever and they got the idea from Steve Martin.
Re: The Movie Topic
Okay, I'm going to come clean and just say it. I feel safe here. Why Tyler Perry has become an icon I have not a clue. He irritates the holy fuck out of me. I guess he's a lot smarter than he comes across to me because he's made a freaking fortune at relatively young age, but I don't see it.

Re: The Movie Topic
Yeah, his flicks don't seem like they'd translate well at all overseas. I had a way to look at it more positively though... if the whole thing bombs, maybe he'll go away for awhile & study film making & acting!
On a totally different note, I read that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is gonna appear in the next Dark Knight movie! Don't know as who but good god, I soooooo cannot wait to see this movie!

Re: The Movie Topic
Are those the videos you posted here? If they are, I haven't watched them yet. If they're not, I'm confused.
Re: The Movie Topic
The beer commercials were funny. I like the Marilyn Monroe one a bit more. The 'glasses' at the end, lol!
I finally got around to watching RocknRolla today. Pretty good movie but I think it's one of those ones you need to watch twice to get it all. Wait, no, I get it all, but just, IDK, will clear up anything I'm iffy on. One thing I thought of while watching it was "Was this movie made for The Girls of the Gutter Club???" Cuz like whoa, we've got Gerard Butler for Dean, Idris Elba for CB & Tom Hardy & Mark Strong for me all together in one film! They left it open for a sequel, wonder if it'll ever get made...

Welps, no one really seems to be on here tonight so I think Ima va-moose but for good reason; I reactivated my Netflix account & found not one but THREE Tom Hardy movies in my instant queue (means I can watch them now on my computer & don't have to wait for DVD), 2 of which he is the star of. I'll post reviews whenever I'm done. Toodles!!!
Re: The Movie Topic
Sorry I've got a bad relapse at the moment and not good company. Back to the doctors but I've been told by doc that people who've had this SF in a milder form than me are still sick after 6 weeks. It's been since 23rd December 2010 not amused by that comment.
Not seen that movie, what's the plot? Mmm Gutter Club made movies think we should suggest this to Hollywood more often.

Re: The Movie Topic
That sux so much! I feel so bad for you Dean!!!! I know how much I hate being sick & that just really isn't fair.
It's a Guy Ritchie movie. Here's the trailer (cuz I'm lazy & don't feel like explaining it, lol)
Alright, let's see... I watched Bronson the other night. Interesting movie. At first I was like, this isn't giving me a whole hell of a lot of insight, but then I realized it's supposed to be from his POV. Tom Hardy was really fantastic in it, total creep. And jeezy creezy, I saw more of him than I expected to, LMAO!!!
I also watched Wuthering Heights. I've never seen any of the movie versions & never read the book so it was all pretty new to me. It was good too. You know who else was in it... Andrew Lincoln from The Walking Dead! Yeah, he was the man Catherine ended up marrying. All the actors did a great job, especially Tom. Made you really hate Heathcliff but also kinda see his perspective too.

Re: The Movie Topic
OMG please read Wuthering Heights it's a classic and if you ever get to see the the one with Lawrence Oliver and Merle Oberon do so. I love black and white movies and this one is the best movie of that story ever.

On a different theme Tom Hardy just won a Bafta for best newcomer and The Kings Speech won best film. Yes, two Brits !!!

Re: The Movie Topic
Yeah, if I can find a copy & when I'm done reading everything else I'm supposed to, I'll give it a go.
Two Brits won at the BAFTAs; there's a shocker! LMAO!!!!!!!! Nah, but really, that's cool. Who else was nominated in Tom Hardy's catergory? It was something like best newcomer, right? Was he there???

Re: The Movie Topic
No he was filming I think. They were people I didn't know to be honest and well I'd never class him as a newcomer would you?
Re: The Movie Topic
I guess not since he's been around for awhile. It probably is more like a breakout performanceperformance award more so than a newcomer award.
Re: The Movie Topic
We watched Buried last night, can't remember if you've seen it Sam.
It was okay, got better as it went along. Surprise ending.

Re: The Movie Topic
That's super Weirdy McWeirderton cuz I watched that the other night!!! I didn't really care for it but not because it had a... I'm gonna discuss the movie now...
depressing ending. I don't mind him dying at the end but there wasn't much going on. Like he didn't do any self reflection or anything and there was no extra stories going on to pick up some of the slack from the small main story. So him dying at the end... made me feel like the whole film was pretty much a waste of time cuz there was no resolution and nothing else to care about. Everyone I watched it felt the same way. We all knew we didn't love the movie but couldn't exactly pin point why until my brother said that and we were all like, That's Why!!!

Re: The Movie Topic
Yeah like I said it was okay but nothing more than that. It was hard to connect to him because there was only what we knew while in the coffin. We did think at first oh no English accent that's the bad guy then.
Although if you had other stories going on around him it would detract from the impact of him being in the coffin.
Did you expect him to die or be rescued?

Re: The Movie Topic
I had a feeling he was gonna die b/c I heard a lot about the movie and then after it opened it kinda fell off the face of the earth. That usually happens when either a movie is really stinky or has an ending people don't like. I didn't think it was gonna be them digging up another grave though.
