So the film will be out next year and no this isn't about the guy with the bowler hat and Joanna Lumbley and if you don't know what I'm talking about just politely smile ! Very Happy

So we have a film with loads of super heroes but what is the plot. Who is the enemy or is this just comic con done on celluloid ?

Any trailers available add them here too.

Quick little interviews at the premiere of Captain America. No Mark Ruffalo though! RDJ is hilarious. Definitely see Stark & Thor clashing in the movie a bit...

Chris Evans is like 6', definitely not short.

Very good fake trailer, could use a little tightening up, but yeah, I liked it!

The Avengers Empty Re: The Avengers

Post by Madnad Wed Jul 27, 2011 11:14 am

Okay, I thought I would give a little back ground to the cast of characters that you will see in The Avengers. Forgive my geekery.

So, as you know, The Avengers is a team of superheroes from the Marvel universe, created by Stan Lee. The founding members were Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Wasp and Ant-Man. Later on, they are joined by Captain America.

They work quite closely with S.H.I.E.L.D which is the organisation the Nick Fury works for.

Thor
The Avengers Th_thor-avengersSon of Odin, he was cast out of Asgard to teach him humility. In the comics, he inhabits the body of a skinny doctor called Donald Blake. While on holiday in Norway, Blake discovers a hammer, Mjolnir, and when he strikes it he turns into Thor. Slightly different to the film, but if you pay attention, Erik (Stellan "Alex's Dad" Skarsgard) has a book from his friend Donald Blake, so that was an in-joke for the fans. In the comics, his love interest Jane Forster, is a nurse that works with Dr Blake. His arch nemesis is his step brother, Loki, as in the film.

Iron Man
The Avengers Th_ironman-avengersIn the comics, Tony Stark is much more of a misogynist and an alcoholic. They toned it down a fair bit in the films. In the comics, Iron Man's arch nemesis is a guy called Mandarin. Stark uses his money to develop weapons for SHIELD. His close friend Rhodes gets a suit of his own, and becomes a sort of sidekick called War Machine. In later issues, he takes over as Iron Man when Tony falls off the wagon, but as the suit isnt calibrated for him, it sends him a bit mad, and Tony has to use an older suit to fight him.

Hulk
The Avengers Th_Hulk-Avengers-posterI think you are all pretty familiar with the Hulk story. The main difference is that in most adaptations when David Banner becomes the Hulk, he is pretty much intelligible. The Hulk that forms the Avengers is has a degree of intelligence, and I am squeeing over the fact that in the Avengers film, the Hulk is being voiced by Lou Ferrigno YAY!

Hawkeye
The Avengers Th_hawkeye-avengersIf you are unfamiliar with Hawkeye, you will have seen him briefly in the Thor movie. Orphaned as a child, he ran away from his orphanage and joined a circus where he trained to be a master archer. In the comics, he runs into Black Widow while she was a spy, and falls in love. He aids her to steal weapons, but after seeing Iron Man in action, he decides to go straight.

Nick Fury
The Avengers Th_shield-avengersIn the comics, Nick Fury is a WWII hero who worked for the CIA, then took over command of SHIELD. He sports an eye patch due to getting shrapnel in his eye during the war. In the films, he recruits the superheroes individually, and forms Avengers, but in the comics, Avengers were formed independently but he persuades them to work for him. He doesnt have any powers as such, although he was given a serum that slows his aging down. Interestingly, he is a white guy in the comics, but now, I cant picture anyone else but Sam Jackson

Black Widow
The Avengers Th_black-widow-avengersBlack Widow, or Natasha Romanoff, is part of SHIELD and sort of the right hand man of Fury. Originally a Soviet spy, she defected to the US. Orphaned as a child, she was raised as a weapon specialist and highly trained in combat by the USSR's 'Black Widow Ops' program. In the comics, she has a long running fling with Daredevil.

Wasp & Ant Man
The Avengers Th_1zmijckAnt Man (Dr Henry Pym) discovered a chemical that allowed the user to grow or shrink in size. Pym would shrink to the size of of an insect, and wearing a helmet that controlled ants, he became part of a crime fighting duo with his wife Janet Van Dyne, or Wasp. Wasp also gained the ability to grow wings and fire energy blasts while she was small. It was Janet that coined the team name The Avengers. Pym later has a major breakdown, due to the stress on his body from all the size changing, and he becomes abusive. He is kicked from the Avengers, and Janet divorces him. She even dates Stark for a bit.

So, who are the bad guys in this film. I dont know for sure, but I would definitely say that Loki will be involved if the Thor post-credits bit is anything to go by. The other possibilities are Mandarin; or HYDRA, a terrorist group that SHIELD has had many run-ins with; or Skrull, a group of alien shape-shifters. My money is on Loki and HYDRA though, but we will see.

Finally, just wanted to share this lovely movie poster.

Brilliant work thank you now I see who everyone is. One question though, pretty much all of the characters are Earth bound and therefore I can see how Nick Fury is able to get people together for the film but how would he contact Thor as he's on another planet and the travelling device Idris Elba controlled was destroyed. Or should I just wait and see how they get around that, no doubt by saying it's fixed.

In the comics Thor is still earthbound, stuck in side Dr Blake, and he is never reconciled with Odin.
In the post credits of the film version however, you see Sam Jackson talking to Daddy Skarsgard. They are talking about the 'cosmic cube' which I am presuming will be the magical mcguffin that is used to somehow bring Thor back to earth.
The deal is for 7 films I think, so they will be planting clues through out all the films.

So does that mean all actors have signed up for the 7 or just the studio's ? Do you mean planting clues in all the super hero films lately ?

I read somewhere (cant remember where) that the studio had signed a multi film agreement with Marvel. All the films would be linked - ie Iron Man 1 & 2, Thor, Captain America and Hulk (the Ed Norton one). They have all been tied together by appearances from Sam Jackson (Nick Fury) mostly in the post credits part.

I figured that they probably sprinkled a few other clues, like the Cosmic Cube, along the way but we probably wont recognise them until we see Avengers. We obviously have another Iron Man film, and another Thor film too on the horizon.

Spiderman is due for a reboot too(although why I have no idea) and although this is Marvel, I dont think this will be connected with the above, but then again, Spidey was briefly part of the Avengers, as was Wolverine from Xmen.
